So what is perc & mantle?
Perc
Percolation tests measures how fast the water drops through the soil. The Perc test is used used to determine the length of the leach field. The hole is pre-soaked to simulate winter time or wet weather conditions. Readings of how quickly water leaves this hole are taken the following day. These reading are then averaged to calculate your average percolation rate.

Mantle
The soil mantle test measures the ability of your soil to filter sewage. Soil test pits or soil mantles are excavations dug by a backhoe to determine effective soil depth. Effective soil is considered soil that will treat or filter sewage measuring characteristics to remove disease causing organisms. For a standard sewage system between 6-8 feet of effective soil is required depending on the county requirements.
